Awesome Bruce has been my partner for more than half my life. My brother watched a Bruce Lee movie and the day Bruce was foaled, he became Bruce. I loved the word awesome and while day-dreaming, I could hear the race announcer calling, “It’s Awesome Bruce.” My brother and I would go to the pasture, sit down, and Bruce would l lie down with his head in our laps. A bond formed that I can not explain. When my father put Bruce in a sale, I couldn’t lose the horse I loved! I had graduated high school and had a good job, so I took out a loan. It was a two-hour drive to the sale. I was stand-offish with my father, who normally was my best friend. When my dad realized I was the one who had bid on him, he looked at me and said, “What are you going to do with this horse? You live with me and have no where to keep him.” This was the only disagreement I ever had with my father. It was a quiet ride home. I was very proud of myself, but I walked on eggshells around my father for quite a while. My grandfather and I, with acceptance from my dad, raced him and won a variety of races and chariot races. Since then, Bruce and I have out-rode and ponied racehorses at many tracks, plus won barrels and poles in everything from jackpots and horse shows to sanctioned rodeos. For 15 years, Bruce has had all of the Equine Senior he can eat; and at the age of 25, my AQHA friend is still going strong, competing and winning. As for the future, I tell everyone he is immortal.
