It was Halloween, pitch black, and I was running through a pasture trying to find an exit. The girl ahead of me said “Stay close, and watch out for Ike.” I thought, “Watch out for who?” There was this squeal, and Ike came flying out of the barn. I peeled one way, he went the other, and I let out an unmanly squeal of my own. That’s how I first met Ike. Flash forward 13 years, I married that same girl, and imagine my surprise that Ike was still kicking around after all of those years. He was by now at least 20. He was huge to me, at least 16 hands sounded huge, and I wasn’t even sure what a “hand” was. I knew “for better or for worse” meant this old gelding and I better be able to get along. Here was this goofy horse that acted like a two year old in fresh snow, but he turned as docile as a puppy when it came to kids on his back, or a nervous husband. He’s been the best teacher I’ve had when learning to ride. He takes care of me, even when I don’t know I need it. His joints creek from time to time, but he is still going strong. I’m still learning, but I can safely say Purina Senior horse feed has kept the doors open for us to consider as we work to keep “The Old Man” at his best during his golden years. When my wife makes a shopping list, it just got a little easier. One item, every time. Thank you, Purina, for making the learning curve with nutrition easier on me, as I have enough to learn about all other things horse related.
